Training for disasters before they happen

American Red Cross preparations for disasters continue even when no disaster is on the horizon. Watch this WNCT video.

The American Red Cross in eastern North Carolina

In 33 counties across eastern North Carolina, the American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. This area is highly vulnerable to hurricanes, so preparedness is a necessity. The Red Cross is ready to provide shelters and assistance if a hurricane does strike. Red Cross volunteers are also on call 24 hours a day to respond to house fires and other "small" disasters that are just as devastating to a family. The Red Cross receives no government funding for providing this service and is not a government agency. The Red Cross also provides an emergency communications link between deployed military personnel and their families, collects blood donations and teaches lifesaving skills such as CPR and First Aid.
